Clearly
a diamond in the rough, Cafe Zia could be the best kept dining
secret in the SDSU area. A regular hotspot for students, the
cafe itself receives most of it's new customers from word
of mouth and not flashy advertising, because the food simply
speaks for itself.
Tucked into a small three building strip mall off of bustling
El Cajon Blvd., Cafe Zia is easy to miss, but definitely unforgettable.
The owner, Khaled Zia, brings his own ethnic twist to his
culinary masterpieces. Being of Afghan decent, Khaled incorporates
a variety of chutney sauces into an otherwise traditional
menu which includes a variety of wrap sandwiches, salads,
tacos, and pita sandwiches. The chutney's, ranging from flavors
such as mango, peach, and my personal favorite, Serrano chili
pepper, creates an unusual mouthwatering flavor and work brilliantly
with every dish.
The massive side order known as 'Homie Fries': a plate of
grilled potatoes, onions and marinated tofu, are simply to
die for! Cafe Zia caters to all, picky palates included. With
a cuisine that is both vegetarian friendly and a carnivorous
delight, all who dare to reach dining ecstasy will leave fulfilled
at Cafe Zia. The menu price is moderate to low and the environment
is real laid back.
